Qs & Predictions
I'm wondering whether or not the Thought Police is going to release Winston. Doing so would mean they believe that their conditioning and torture is going to last - that there's not way his anti-party thoughts are going to resurface. This seems unrealistic. Sure in the face or torture he's willing to confess anything, and in the face of his greatest fear he's willing to give up Julia, however why would they think that'll last once he's out just living his life, safe (at least in that moment)? If somehow he does get released, would the party let him live out his life or just kill him sometime in the future. I expect they might just kill him, but then what was the point of doing this in the first place? The other option would be to kill him, and if they feel the need to do that publicly all his torture may have been worth it. Otherwise, if they're going to kill him as he's walking down the hallway as Winston suspects, I still don't understand what all the torture was for. Maybe I didn't keep up with O'Brian's complicated explanations of the way the party works, but if his last moments are really going to be spent solely within the Ministry, how could any rebellious thoughts make any difference? Why would him remaining outside of the party's control affect anything in the outside world. I do remember O'Brian explaining this at some point but I guess I disagreed with some of his deductions - or maybe just didn't fully understand them who knows. His vague arguments about how any amount of rebellion against the party, even if just in someone's thoughts, would eventually lead to it's demise just didn't do it for me.
Is he ever going to see Julia again? Even if the Ministry of Truth releases them both, would the Thought Police let them see each other? Will the effects of the rats/whatever they showed Julia be big and lasting enough to where they don't wish to see each other?
